The drama is adapted from the bestselling science fiction series of the same name by Hugh Howe.

The story takes place in a dystopian future, where approximately 10000 humans reside in a 144 story deep silo shaped bunker. They are told that the outside world has become unsuitable for human habitation due to a toxic gas infection.

The remaining survivors take refuge in the bunker and establish rules to maintain the functioning of a new society within it.
